A new home has been created for Community Servings, Inc. (CSI), a non-profit food and nutrition program that provides services to individuals and families living with critical and chronic illnesses. Founded in 1989, CSI found that it had outgrown its old facility and could not accommodate the growing number of individuals and families in need of its meal service.
With MHIC’s $4.8 million New Markets Tax Credit investment, CSI was able to purchase and rehabilitate a dilapidated, vacant industrial building and create considerably more space than it previously had, doubling its meal preparation capacity. The new facility is located on Marbury Terrace in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood.
The project involved total reconfiguration of the building to create a state-of-the-art kitchen, expanded food storage space, offices, and classrooms for volunteer training. The increased space enables CSI to extend its geographic reach in eastern Massachusetts and expand its operations to include new programs and a new line of business — the preparation and sale of meals on a wholesale basis to other meals programs. In its new facility, CSI now serves 377,000 free meals to 1,450 people per year. The non-profit also offers nutritional education and counseling and food service job training, among other community programs.
