Ed and Cindy Byers started Custom Blends – producing Cindy’s Kitchen products -- in 1996, employing an ethnically diverse, low-income, hard-to-employ local workforce. Providing good benefits and other support, the company cultivated a dedicated workforce and had a steady stream of local residents seeking jobs. After years of rapid growth (37% over a three year period, reaching $6 million in sales in 2007), the company found its future growth constrained in its cramped, leased quarters. The company was turning away customers.
MHIC’s New Markets financing made it possible for Custom Blends to purchase and rehabilitate a 27,890 square-foot building – tripling the amount of space it has. The company is growing. Its revenues have reached $10 million and it now employs 90 people. Cindy’s Kitchen products are distributed nationally.
