The Holyoke Public Library celebrated its official Grand Opening on November 22, 2013. Built in 1902, this library serves one of the state’s poorest areas; Holyoke has the highest percentage of children living in poverty and its school district is the poorest performing in the state. Unfortunately, the library had not been substantially renovated in its 100+ year history, and nearly 40% of the building was inaccessible because of the deterioration. Using NMTC financing, the library has been transformed into a 21st century education and training center providing both traditional library services as well as a full array of after school programs and adult learning opportunities for Holyoke residents. Library visits are expected to increase by 100,000/year, increasing the safety and economic vitality of this struggling neighborhood adjacent to downtown.
